Last weekend we went to Van Buren State Park for a (now) annual camping trip. We brought out tents, and cooked our food off the fire pit. This year I was looking at a camping location that included access to Lake Michigan. It wasn’t as nice as lake access up by Sleeping Bear Dunes, but considerably closer and just as fun. Despite some inclement weather throughout the camping trip we made it work.
Saturday was spent canoeing, and despite the massive amount of bugs, the river was fairly challenging so I had a fun time. Pat had the great idea to grab water guns this year since they were on sale on Amazon. Best idea ever. Water wars on the river whenever we passed each other turned into these epic skirmishes that involved subterfuge as well as direct assault. Near the end a storm was rolling in so we paddled like heck to get out of there. Everyone was pretty exhausted after our 7 mile journey, but it was definitely an enjoyable time. Still looking to tweak and improve the experience but we’ll get there.
We cooked dinner, recuperated, and in the morning packed up to go. Our last stop was Bell’s Eccentric Cafe where we all enjoyed some food and brews before saying our good byes.
Here’s hoping we have a good turn out in August!
