2018 North American International Auto Show

I profess I’m not much of a car guy. But growing up in the surrounding suburbs of Detroit and having family and friends working in the automotive industry does tend to keep you engaged. When the auto show comes around, downtown gets bustling. Luckily I don’t have to work down there like some of my friends do.

This year I was able to catch the auto show with my coworkers. Luckily, I am in no short supply of friends to explain cars to me – they patiently answer all my questions; thanks guys! I had orchestra, so I was a bit late to the party but we walked around and admired/lamented the new models.

Dan sat in and checked out his future new car, Rick was pleased that he got a 2017 Volkswagen, as the newest model didn’t quite jive with him, and I pestered Matt and Gerry about various car designs and parts. It was a fun stroll through the show.

VR was a huge thing this year. People would put on a Google Daydream, HTC Vive, or Oculus and “drive” a car at various booths. I joked with Dan about building one of the pneumatic seats that had force feedback.

One other booth of interest I saw was a carpool karaoke booth. They would green screen you into a car while you sang along to a song of your choosing. I thought it was an interesting choice and just demonstrated the popularity of James Corden’s segment.

After our walk-through our stomachs were grumbling, so I suggested we eat at Green Dot Stables.

I am a huge fan of eating at Green Dot. I am not the only one though; the line is always long and you have to wait like 30-45 min. Luckily we only had to wait about 20-25 min before we were seated.

We had some beers, and ordered a lot of food. Everything there is on average $3. It makes for an easy check splitting. I ordered a total of 9 items: 1 beer, 7 burgers, 1 truffle fries. I finished it all and was not stuffed but was definitely satiated. There are just too many options so I want to try it all. I think I’m about at the end of my tasting tenure there though. I will soon be able to order a comfortable 4ish burgers, and know they are my favorite ones. Right now I tend to order a Fried Chicken, a PB&J, and also a Crispy Pork Belly. Delicious.
